The Problem

The Problem

Despite India's leadership in digital payments, Apple Pay remains unavailable due to local regulations.
With NFC locked to Apple Pay, iPhone users are unable to access UPI Tap n Pay — limiting Apple’s potential in a UPI-driven market.

UPI Cash. Inspired by the way we pay.

UPI Cash. Inspired by the way we pay.

I designed the UPI Cash Card to feel as natural as handing over money.
Its textured finish recalls the touch of paper currency, reimagined for the digital age.
No distractions. No unnecessary details.
Just a simple, seamless way to send — not receive — with a feeling that's as familiar as cash, and as secure as Apple Pay.

Persona

Yashaank, 26

Project Manager, AlmaBetter

"I bought the iPhone for its experience, but not being able to tap and pay with my cards in India feels like a step backward."

Yashaank, a focused project manager, juggles meetings, reviews, and sprint planning throughout his workweek.
A metro commuter with coffee in hand, he prefers fast, tap-to-pay breakfasts and seamless tools that simplify life.
Tech-savvy and detail-driven, he recently switched to an iPhone 16 Pro — but missing tap-to-pay for UPI and cards disrupted his otherwise streamlined routine.

Frustration

I can’t use my iPhone for Tap n Pay with my credit cards. NFC is there, but it’s locked.

Needs

Wants to use his iPhone for secure, contactless payments at retail stores and public transport — just like he did on Android.

Insights

Yashaank expects the same ease of use on iOS that he had on Android — especially for everyday payments. His pain reveals the gap in Apple Pay’s availability and integration with India’s payment ecosystem.

Listening to Indian Users: User Survey

Listening to Indian Users: User Survey

When designing a version of Apple Pay for India, I believed that the best ideas wouldn’t come from assumptions — they would come from listening.
So, I conducted a detailed user survey across urban Indian smartphone users aged between 18–45 years (Sample Size- 200), focusing on their payment habits, technology usage, security expectations, and friction points.

Device Ownership and Digital Behavior

Device Ownership and Digital Behavior

A significant majority of respondents (around 70%) reported owning an iPhone.
Among them, most were actively using other Apple services like iCloud, Apple Music, or Apple TV — showing a deep commitment to the Apple ecosystem.

What this told me:
Indian iPhone users aren’t occasional customers — they are ecosystem participants.
This meant any UPI integration had to feel native, not layered on.

When it came to daily payments:

  • Mobile UPI apps (PhonePe, Google Pay, Paytm) were the first choice for more than 80% of users.

  • Cards came second.

  • Cash was barely used for regular transactions.

What this told me:
In India, users have already transitioned away from cards and cash — UPI is the default.
Building a card-first experience (like traditional Apple Pay) wouldn’t solve their real problem.

Tap ‘n’ Pay Adoption

Tap ‘n’ Pay Adoption

Despite having NFC-enabled devices, most users had either:

  • Never tried Tap ‘n’ Pay (majority)

  • Tried it once but didn’t continue

Why?
Because Apple Pay isn’t available yet, and third-party apps don't have access to NFC on iPhone.

What this told me:
It’s not that users don’t want Tap n Pay — they haven’t been given a seamless way to try it.
An effortless, default Tap experience inside Wallet would unlock massive behavior change.

How I Imagine UPI Tap & Pay — Inspired by Apple's Tap to Cash

How I Imagine UPI Tap & Pay —

Inspired by Apple's Tap to Cash

How I Imagine UPI Tap & Pay —

Inspired by Apple's Tap to Cash

When I first experienced Apple’s Tap to Cash animation, it felt like more than sending money — it felt like sending a moment.
The soft pulse, fluid motion, and instant confirmation created a human connection, not just a transaction.

While designing UPI Tap & Pay for Apple Pay in India, I aimed to recreate that same feeling — a simple tap, a subtle animation, and a quiet, secure confirmation.
No clutter, no distractions — just two devices exchanging trust, wrapped in a seamless emotional experience.

What I Introduced in My Apple Pay India Version?

What I Introduced in My Apple Pay India Version?

In the new Apple Pay (India version), users can add a UPI ID alongside their cards, making UPI a core part of the Wallet.
Tap n Pay now supports both tokenized cards and UPI-based payments using NFC.
A built-in QR scanner enables seamless UPI merchant payments without leaving Apple Pay.
In-app transactions offer UPI as a payment method, secured by Face ID or, when required, a UPI PIN.
UPI IDs are tokenized and masked, preserving user privacy and maintaining Apple's trusted, seamless payment experience.

Building UPI into Apple Pay

Building UPI into Apple Pay

When designing UPI payments inside Apple Pay, my goal was simple: minimize friction, maintain trust, and extend the experience without disruption.
I focused on embedding UPI naturally into Apple Pay’s fast, invisible, and secure rhythm.

I focused on embedding UPI naturally into Apple Pay’s fast, invisible, and secure rhythm.

Let's discuss what's in the flow?

It begins with a double-press of the side button and Face ID authentication, opening Apple Pay.
The default payment method — Card, UPI ID, or RuPay — appears on top, with other options neatly below.

When a UPI ID or RuPay card is active, a "Can’t Tap? Scan to Pay" option appears, letting users scan merchant QR codes without leaving Apple Pay.

Tapping it opens a bottom sheet with a QR scanner.
Holding the iPhone over the code securely fetches receiver details, leading to a clean, minimal amount entry screen inspired by Apple Cash.

  • For payments ₹2,000 or below, Face ID completes the transaction instantly.

  • For payments above ₹2,000, a secure UPI PIN entry is required.

A simple summary screen then confirms the payment, with an option to share details or tap Done.

Every detail ensures UPI payments feel as seamless, intuitive, and trusted as any Apple Pay experience.
